In August last year, the Financial Times’ boarddecreed an end to men-only conference panels. Male journalists were encouraged to say we would not appear on panels, whether organised by the FT or by others, if no women were on the stage with us.

① decree [dɪ'kriː] v.

From this primitive base, can Shanghai possibly transform itself into a global financial centre by 2020, as Beijing has decreed?

② panel ['pæn(ə)l] n.

I've never been quizzed by a panel with questions that make no sense: "If you were a car, what car would you be?"

This was not just a challenge to me as a speaker, but as a panel organiser; I frequently have to find both FT colleagues and outside experts to appear at our events and on our executive education programmes.

Some are unhappy about the consequences of “no manel” policies, and they are not all disgruntledmen. Done crudely, these initiatives can look liketokenism and box-ticking. Amanda Bittner, a political scientist at Memorial University in Canada, told the FT last month that she resented being asked to take part in a conference just because she was female.

“The person said to me that they’ve been told to find a woman. That’s unnecessary and actually rude and dismissive,” she said. “We need to be asked to do stuff because we’re missing out if we don’t have women’s voices.”

③ disgruntled [dɪs'grʌnt(ə)ld] adj. 不满的

例句:In recent days, it has not been hard to find disgruntled small investors who say they have been put off investing.

④ tokenism ['təʊk(ə)nɪz(ə)m] n.

Despite pronouncements about being committed to ending apartheid, many US companies engage merely in tokenism.

⑤ resent [rɪ'zent] vt.

Rising nations may decry US imperialism and European meddling and resent the west's innate sense of its own superiority.

⑥ dismissive [dɪs'mɪsɪv] adj. 轻蔑的(+of)

例句:But Mr Brown, a Scot, failed to click with the British electorate, often appearing dismissive.

You did not, for instance, miss out on the "official" discussion of piracy because it's not in the legal edition either.

Others have pointed to problems finding female speakers in fields such as energy and foreign policythink-tanks, where few women are at the top.

⑧ think-tank ['θɪŋk tæŋk] n.

As he writes in Shop Class: "there was more thinking going on in the bike shop than in the think-tank."

So what has my experience been of finding female panellists? It is not that hard. Women are out there, in every field. You just have to look. You can find thousands of company, regulatory body, research institute and university websites with their senior staff listed.

The majority of people at these organisations may be men, but few bodies have no senior women at all. Once you have found someone who looks expert, you can read her research papers or interviews. More important, you can usually find a video of her speaking so that you can assess her public presence.

Impressive women can be found all over, with no question of diluting standards (and plenty of dull male speakers can be found at every conference). Nor, in my experience, is there any need to look for specifically “women’s voices” — just people who know what they are talking about and can do it well.

⑨ dilute [daɪ'lu:t] vt.

She maintains that having no other junior presence to dilute the influence and expectations of the parents can be suffocating.

Second, the search for female experts has led me in new directions. I have started out looking for someone to speak on one subject, and then found a female speaker who could talk about a related but more interesting one.

A few years ago I was helping to organise an FT conference in Johannesburg on corporatelongevity. The idea was to bring together leaders of both well-established companies and start-ups, along with a few academics, to talk about what distinguished those organisations that had been around for a long time. We had no trouble finding senior women, but they were all white.

⑩ longevity [lɒn'dʒevɪtɪ] n.

This bodes well for the longevity of reforms that have already been undertaken, and those that are yet to come," he said.

⑪ well-established [.wel ɪ'stæblɪʃt] adj.

The concept of an educational process being run as a boot camp runs counter to many of the well-established norms of academia.

This was clearly unacceptable at an event in South Africa, so I dug a bit deeper. I found two black women: one heading a department in the local office of one of the Big Four auditing and consulting firms, and a young social entrepreneur, recently returned from an MBA in the UK, who was running mentoring programmes for other young women. She was not the corporate type I had started out looking for, but she looked very interesting.

⑫ audit ['ɔːdɪt] n.

A good first step, therefore, is to take a "water audit" to examine how much the company is using, how much it costs and where it is going.

The first woman produced a sharp critique of the then-Zuma government, in contrast to the cautious and anodyne contributions of some of the other panellists. The second brought an energy and freshness to the event that it would not otherwise have had, and led to other young entrepreneurs hanging around to talk afterwards.

Not only that: I received follow-up emails from future potential speakers who said that if that is what we were looking for, they had something to say too.

⑬ critique [krɪ'tiːk] n.

Meanwhile sceptics of the company advance the opposite critique.

⑭ anodyne ['ænədaɪn] n.

He has offered a few anodyne words about "deplorable" and "unacceptable" behaviour.

It is very easy to keep going back to the people, usually men, we already know and have used before and who proved adequate. It is a short-cutthat obviates the need for harder work. But that is the real box-ticking.

I understand the distaste for quotas, and I can see the danger of relying on a small group of women, just as we relied on the same handful of men. But whenever we are required to add new people to our list of potential candidates, whether for a conference panel or a board of directors, it pushes us to look not only for new people to do the job, but for more creative ways of doing the job.

⑮ short-cut ['ʃɔ:tkʌt] n.

After all, the dirty secret why ratings proliferated in recent years is they offered a seemingly cheap and easy short cut for everybody.

⑯ obviate ['ɒbvɪeɪt] vt.

That does not obviate sensible, in some cases stronger, intergovernmental co-operation.

⑰ quota ['kwəʊtə] n.

The government is trying to control smuggling, which is taking place because exporters are trying to get around the quota restrictions.
